7 Simple Ways to Burn Extra Calories

As summer begins to come to an end, you may be looking for some simple and creative ways to burn a few extra calories.  Listed below are seven ways you can burn calories throughout the day – without ever breaking a sweat!

  1. It is believed that individuals who are Vitamin D deficient take longer to lose weight, so be sure you’re getting enough (about 2,000 milligrams daily).
  2. If you sleep less than four hours a night for extended periods, your metabolism will slow. Try to get between seven and nine hours to optimize calorie-burning benefits.
  3. The calories burned doing housework can quickly add up. Break out the vacuum, wash the dishes, and do the work yourself instead of relying on others.
  4. Laugh hard, laugh often. Not only is it good for your mind, but laughing for ten to fifteen minutes a day can burn up to fifty calories!
  5. Drinking eight cups of water a day will increase your metabolic rate by about thirty percent, so keep hydrated.
  6. Moving at a brisk pace can optimize even the shortest walk, so get moving!
  7. Tapping your foot, pacing, and moving restlessly can help you burn up to 350 calories a day, so go ahead and fidget a bit.

Great tips. Add these.

1)After eating your metabolism goes up approximately 10%. If you get up & move around you can boost this to about 20%.

2)Get up from your desk evey 30 mins & walk down the hall. Move more, sit less.

3)Drink your water ice cold. You will burn extra calories bringing the temp up.

4)Take an oxygen bath...breathe deeply & burn a few extra calories.

I am a firm believer that every little calorie counts so burning a few here & there will make a difference. Happy Losing!

Hi Donna -

Thanks for the tips!! I really agree with number two, though it's one that I find the hardest to actually do.

For some people, it's getting zoned into what they're doing and never coming up for air, and for others it's the stigma that if they aren't behind their desk, they aren't where they're supposed to be.

I try to find little ways to get up and away from my desk now and again. Sometimes I have to consciously get up and walk to someone's office to ask a question instead of e-mailing or picking up the phone, but I figure, like you said, every little bit counts!

Hi Keli, thanks for those tips. We'll try them. But what kind of tummy exercises can somebody that has just been operated upon do after delivery?

@samuel_folorunso -

Since each individuals recovery is different, the best advice I can give to you is to contact your physician to find out exercises he or she believes are best suited for you.

As with any fitness program - you're going to want to start out slow and gradually increase your work out.

If you would like, I can give you more information on the closest Robard center to you so you may speak to someone there for advice, tips, and about any other questions you may have? To do so, just fill out the information on this short form: http://robard.com/Dieter/DieterContact.aspx

Let me know if you need any further assistance! I wish you the best of luck!

@esther: Have you filled out the form atwww.robard.com/dieter/dietercontact.aspx? I think you could benefit from speaking with a provider in your area on how you can make lifestyle changes to accomplish your goal, rather than bouncing from one diet to another. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. Best of luck!

Wow many thanks for the 7 simple ways for to burn extra calories. I am starting right away. What is recommended - drinking warm water or taking it ice cold?
Posted @ Tuesday, February 22, 2011 6:16 AM by Lucy
@Lucy - I've asked this question to the Registered Dietitians we have on staff and their best recommendation is to stay hydrated and drink water at whatever temperature you prefer.

A calorie (with a little 'c') is the energy it takes to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Whereas a Calorie (with a big 'c') is what is referred to in nutrition and is actually a kilocalorie (1 Calorie = 1000 calories). So while you may read in some sources that your body will burn calories in warming up the cold water in your system, it's next to nothing (less than 10 Calories per 8 oz. glass).

Focusing on a healthy diet and exercising to burn more calories than you consume is still the only way to lose weight. Should you have any further questions, leave them in the comments sections below!
