Could Overeating Have a Lasting Effect?

We all have bouts of overeating that are usually accompanied by periods of inactivity. New research is now showing that this sedentary lifestyle, for even a short period of time, can make it harder for individuals to lose weight and keep it off. Read more about the research here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38840913.

If you find yourself taking a break from exercising and eating right, think about how important it is to maintain your routine for long term health. And use the tricks below to help when you’re telling yourself, “I just don’t want to…”

Workout.

Tell yourself that you just need to do a 10 minute workout. It doesn’t seem like much, but chances are that after lacing up your sneakers and getting a move on, you won’t actually stop after the 10 minutes you allocated of your time. But, if you do, you’ve still pulled yourself out of the rut that stopped you from working out in the first place.

Eat healthy.

Temptation is all around you, and depriving yourself of something you really, really want is only going to make you want it more, so remember: it’s okay to treat yourself every once in a while. But, next time you feel yourself slipping away from the healthier options, announce out loud to yourself and anyone within earshot what you plan on eating. Hearing yourself say, “I know XYZ food isn’t good for me, but I’m going to eat it anyway,” will help you to hold yourself accountable for your choices. Even if you are the only person in the room, you’ve now stated that you know it’s the wrong decision, but you are defying logic. And chances are you’ll be more aware of what you’re doing and decide against doing it.

How do you motivate yourself (or what do you tell others to do) when you just don’t feel like following your diet and meal plan?
