Get Up! Get Out! And Help Fight Childhood Obesity!

Did you know that each year over $150 billion are spent to treat obesity-related medical conditions? As the President Barack Obama proclaimed, “This is not the future to which we want to consign our children, and it is a burden our health care system cannot bear.”

In a recent presidential proclamation, President Barack Obama declared September 2010 as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Along with the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign and the President’s Task Force on Childhood Obesity, this proclamation strengthens Americas stance on the fight against childhood obesity.

As weight loss professionals and individuals concerned with health and wellness, you are already doing your part to fight the growing epidemic of obesity. This month, I urge you to reflect upon what you are doing and brainstorm how you (and your center) can make a bigger impact. A few suggestions:

• Sign the Obesity Action Coalition’s Petition to End Childhood Obesity Discrimination and Bullying: http://www.obesityaction.org/stopbullying.php
• Consider adopting the Healthy Families Create Healthy Futures program in your center: http://robard.com/CustomerBenefits/HealthyFamiliesHealthyFutures.aspx
• Find a registered event (or hold one) that you can participate in to have fun, be more active, and show your support: http://www.healthierkidsbrighterfutures.org/events/
