Resolve to Do Something Better

For years now, whenever I’ve asked my dad what his New Year’s Resolution was going to be, his response has been, “I’m giving up broccoli [or cauliflower, or some other vegetable that he doesn’t ever eat].”  It seems like the no-fail way to make a resolution: Resolve to be something you already are, do something you already do, or continue to abstain from something you already go without.

That doesn’t sound so hard, but it also doesn’t sound like next year is going to be any different than this one. So instead, I’m going to resolve to do something better. This way I’m setting myself up for a win and not creating some lofty (and possibly unrealistic) goal.

So if you’re with me on this and are looking for ways that you can do something better, consider resolving:

To park in the last row at work instead of the first. You’re going to walk into work either way, so why not give yourself a couple extra steps?

Further your knowledge.

Weight Loss Center Managers: Consider attending our Key Operating Statistics webcast at 2:00 pm EST, January 12th. You’ll learn to evaluate and monitor your program, staff, and marketing efforts and define areas for improvement. Visit www.robard.com/webcast for more information.

Weight Loss Counselors, join our 30-minute conference call each month.  This month’s call, America’s Obesity Epidemic: Fingertip Facts for Staff. Register for either January 18th call at 11:00 am EST or the January 19th call at 4:00 pm EST by visiting www.robard.com/conferencecall. (Please note: Our staff training calls are open to Robard customers only.)

To keep a food diary. By doing this, you aren’t resolving to change your eating habits, just to monitor them. Seeing trends in your eating (healthy and un-healthy) will help you better understand what changes you may need to make in the future.

Spend more time with your friends and family. This one shouldn’t be very hard, but by getting up and getting out, you’ll spend less time behind a computer or in front of the TV and more time doing something.

Of course there are many ways you can resolve to do something better, so I’d love to know what your New Year’s resolution is. Leave it in the comments section below.

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year! Look for many new and exciting articles geared towards dieters and weight loss professionals next year. And, if you have anything you’d like to read about or any comments or questions, feel free to e-mail me at kelli@robard.com.

@frank: You’re right in saying that calories consumed and calories burned need to balance to maintain weight, but consuming only one meal per day is not metabolically advisable as people really need to balance their macro and micro nutrient intakes to support a healthy lifestyle. Since overweight individuals tend to have a higher incidence of insulin resistance, it very important for them to have regular and balanced meals.

Although calorie restriction is more effective than exercise for targeted weight loss, many professionals, including our staff, believe exercise plays an important role. During the weight loss phase, the importance of exercise is stressed to encourage dieters to find non-food activities they enjoy and can maintain. Additionally, there are psychological benefits to increased activity that go beyond the level of calories burned. And, exercise is important during the maintenance phase and it has even been documented in the National Weight Loss Registry that those who successfully maintain weight loss exercise regularly, eat breakfast, and maintain consistent eating habits.

Of course, there is no single answer that covers all people, which is why our programs support individuals of different lifestyles and include many different meal plan options with varying numbers of meals and snacks. It is our hope that through these options, our products, our support materials, and the assistance of weight loss professionals, that each individual can find the program he or she needs to help them move towards a healthier, happier lifestyle.
