What a Serving Size Looks Like

Breakfast time! Grab that box of your favorite cereal, pour it into a large bowl, add some milk and enjoy a healthy breakfast.

The problem is (cereal choice aside) the portion size you’ve poured for yourself could vastly differ from the serving size listed on the back of the box. So that 100 calories per 1 cup serving (for example) might need to be multiplied 2, 3, or 4 times.

If you don’t always have measuring cups, tablespoons, and food scales on hand, use the guides below to help make your portion size match the recommended serving size:applebaseball

One serving of… Should look like..
Cereal Fist
Pancakes Compact Disc
Bagel Yo-yo
Cheese (1 oz.) Four stacked dice
Fresh Fruit Baseball
Meat and Poultry (3 oz.) Deck of Cards
Pasta, Rice, or Potatoes Tennis Ball
Ice Cream (½ cup) ½ Baseball

Hi Abby - It was my hope with this article to provide a resource for when measuring food intake is not always practical. There will undoubtedly be times when the proper tools aren't on hand, so knowing that a serving of pasta is about the size of a tennis ball can help a dieter to stay on track and adapt his or her new eating habits to a myriad of situations and events.
