Could Your Weight Put You at a Greater Risk During a Car Crash?

Higher quality of life. Lower cholesterol. Increased energy levels. Illness and disease prevention. Improved health. Increased mobility.

Need another reason to lose weight?

A new study finds when compared to normal-weight individuals, moderately obese drivers – those with a BMI between 35 and 39 - are 21% more likely to die in a severe motor vehicle accident and morbidly obese individuals – those with a BMI greater than or equal to 40 – have a 56% increased risk. Overweight individuals – with a BMI between 25 and 29 – however, have a decreased risk of death when compared to normal-weight individuals.

Part of the risk for obese individuals is attributed to the body’s closeness to the steering wheel (which leaves less time for his or her body to slow down before impact) and because obese individuals are more likely to have complications during surgery or have more serious illnesses.

The bottom line: While having a little extra weight can provide a small amount of extra padding that could save your life during a car crash, too much extra weight can put you at an even greater risk.
