Do Good. Be Good. And Lose Some Weight While You’re at It!

marathon

This upcoming weekend, I’ll be participating in a local Relay for Life walk to support those who have battled cancer, to remember loved ones, and to raise money for and the awareness of the fight against cancer. So, when it’s my turn to walk – as Relay for Life entails taking turns walking around a track or park during a 24 hour period, with one person from your team on the track at all times– I’ll be striding towards a cause and my own fitness goals.

Here’s where my challenge to you comes in:

Pick a cause, any cause (see the list at the bottom of this entry for a few ideas) and visit that organization’s website for information about their charity run/walk. Keep in mind your current fitness level and aim of participation (social, physical fitness, etc.). For example, if you are just starting out on your fitness plan go for a shorter event, such as a 1 mile walk, or a Relay for Life type event where you only do as much as you can. If you feel up to something a bit more challenging, consider a 5K.

Lose weight while doing good.

While you’re walking, jogging, or running, you’ll be burning calories without hitting the gym for a traditional workout. And because you’re supporting a good cause, you’ll feel better spiritually and emotionally too! To make it even more fun, ask your family and friends, and bring your family pet – if allowed!

Own a fitness center, weight loss clinic, or doctor’s office? Why not sponsor a team? Help build a sense of community with your dieters, in a fun, out of the office event, that is both supportive and will help your dieters take another step towards accomplishing their weight loss goals!

When you sign up for an event – or if you already are – let us know in the comments section below so we can cheer you, and your cause, on!

Idea sounds excellent and guaranteed to work especially the team spirit, involved in walking!
Unfortunately I am in Nigeria and the major problem here is poverty! Where do I begin?

@Dr Morenike Sanni -

Walking for a charitable organization is just one way to do good and work towards your weight loss goals at the same time, but it's not the only way. Other types of volunteering can help out just as much - and be just as physical - without being backed by money.

Search around for an organization that you can volunteer your time with. I'm sure they'll be happy to have you, and at the same time, most likely you won't just be sitting behind a desk. You'll be doing something physical that can help burn extra calories.

If you can't find an organization, maybe you can start some type of group with you friends/family members to do something (no matter how small) for your community. Even something as small as organizing a local soccer/football game can make an impact (helping to spread positive emotional/physical health) to those around you.

Volunteering your time and expertise can have the same (or more) impact as donating money.

Best of luck to you! Keep us updated with your progress!

We have been involved with our local Breast Cancer Awareness Fund raiser for many years. Last year we sponsored the walk for a cure PLUS as always, donated $1.00 for each pound our clients lost in October.(it is always quite a big loss) We have "pink stuff" everywhere. We put up one Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon for each pound that is lost (we do this daily) so by the end our office is covered with ribbons. This inspires us & our clients

How we can lose our weight?

@Donna - Those sound like great fundraisers! Not only is your center doing good, but I bet your dieters really get into it. Do you find that these things become big motivators and raise a small competition amongst your members?

At my walk this weekend, we each bought string and got a bead to put on it for each lap we did. Every mile, we got a colored bead. Something as small as that became such a big motivator for me to continue on.. I wanted to be able to display those beads (now in my office here at Robard) to show off my accomplishment!

I think little things like this can be very big motivators to dieters!

can lose our weight:

1. Cut out all processed foods for at least 2 weeks. Eat only natural, unprocessed foods for a couple of weeks, then switch to a carb rotation diet. That means even cutting breads, pastas, and other wheat/grain products! Get at least 90% of your weekly calories from lean proteins, high-fiber "good" carbs (e.g. vegetables, fruits, beans, etc.), and healthy fats (e.g. olive oil, natural peanut butter, etc.). Have 1 "cheat" meal a week where you can eating anything and as much as you want.

2. Do short, higher-intensity workouts 3-4 times a week. This will burn fat while also forcing your body to pump out powerful steroid-like hormones that boost your metabolism while preserving lean muscle.

3. Take whey protein powder and a good multivitamin. These are the best "support" supplements for losing weight in a fast but healthy way. Whey protein, especially, is great for making ultra-healthy, appetite-suppressing protein shakes.

4. Stay focused and motivated. Do whatever it takes to stay focused on your goal of losing 10 pounds fast. The more focused and motivated you are, the easier it will be to lose the weight quickly. Write down your goal on paper and read it daily. Surround yourself with photos of fit, lean people. Watch motivational videos daily.

@Rachell - Some really great tips in there! Obviously different plans work for different people, so I wouldn't say that your diet outlined in number 1 would work for everyone, but I'm glad to hear it worked for you! Has anyone else tried something similar and found success?

I think you have some great ideas in number four on staying motivated! Keep reaffirming those goals and you'll reach them!! :)
