STOP Emotional Eating

emotional eatingHoping food will soothe you in a stressful situation or occupy you when you’re bored sabotages your weight loss efforts. Not only are you most likely eating too much and forgetting to practice portion control, but you are probably gravitating towards sweet, fatty foods with little to no nutritional value.

Prep yourself and your home for when these cravings arise by taking away temptation. If the sweet treats you crave aren’t on hand, you’ll have an easier time letting the feeling pass.

However, when cravings do come on, try to evaluate them to see if they are physical or emotional based. If your stomach isn’t rumbling and you ate a few short hours ago, you’re probably not really hungry. When this happens, divert your attention from your craving by taking a walk, playing with your dog, calling a friend, or some other activity.

But, if you find that you’re having cravings that you can’t seem to manage, talk to your weight loss counselor! He or she can help you uncover the real reason behind your cravings and work with you to develop strategies to better manage them and your emotions.
