4 Ways to Enjoy Halloween Candy – Without Overindulging

The trick-or-treators have come and gone, leaving you with piles of candy that you bought to give away (or that your own children brought home). All that stands between you and these diet busting, unhealthy treats is the lid of the candy jar, which really isn’t a barrier against temptation. Use the tips below to prevent all that candy from breaking your otherwise healthy diet:

  1. Share! Take the treats in to work, put them in a bowl, and leave them in a common area (not on your desk where you’ll be constantly tempted). When they’re out of sight and mind, you’ll be less likely to have one.
  2. Donate! Did you know some dentist offices buy candy from kids and then send it overseas to the troops? Sure, you might only make about $1 a pound, but you’ll be doing some good, for yourself, your kids’ teeth, and the men and women serving our country. Find a dentist here. Not one in your area? Consider Operation Shoebox or Operation Gratitude to donate directly to the troops.
  3. Hold a science experiment (great for kids)! Teach your kids about acidity, density, and even nutrition with Candy Experiments. For example, drop a Warhead in baking soda water and watch bubbles erupt. The pleasure you and your kids will get out of this will last longer than the taste of the candy on your tongue.
  4. Build a house! With Christmas right around the corner, take the candy and get working on building your gingerbread house this year. Starting early will give you something to display all season long.

Just can’t bear to part with it? Divide it up into 12 bags (one for each month) and place in the freezer. Each month you’ll have a limited supply of candy to enjoy when cravings arise, but not an overwhelming amount that will tempt you to overindulge.Do you have any other ideas to share? Let us know!
